Privacy Policy

What Clif collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how to get it deleted.

This Privacy Policy explains how Clif (“we”, “us”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you use the Clif mobile application and the Clif website at clif.app (together, the “service”). By using Clif, you agree to the practices described here.

Information we collect

  • Account information. When you sign in with Google, we receive your email address and name to create and identify your account. We never receive or store your Google password.
  • Learning activity and preferences. We store data you generate in the app and in the quiz on clif.app: books you save, chapters you complete, highlights you save, daily-streak progress, review history, and the answers you give us about your goals, routine, reading speed, age range, and gender, so we can sync your library, personalise recommendations, and show your progress. Taking the quiz is optional (you can sign in and buy premium on clif.app without it), but once you start the quiz, each question has to be answered before you can move on to the next screen. The gender question includes a “Prefer not to say” option.
  • Technical data. Standard request data (such as app version and timestamps) needed to operate and secure the service.
  • Usage analytics and crash reports. We record how the service is used: screens opened, steps completed in the quiz, whether a checkout was started or finished, so we can see where people get stuck. In the app these events are tied to your account, and your email address is attached to your analytics profile; on clif.app they are not tied to your identity unless you sign in. The app also reports crashes and errors automatically, which can include technical details of what the app was doing when it failed. This is handled by PostHog; see how we share information.
  • Device storage. As you answer the quiz on clif.app, your answers, including your age range, gender, reading speed, goals, chosen topics, and the insight you kept, are saved in that browser’s local storage so you can pick the quiz back up where you left off. Local storage is not cleared when you close the tab: those answers stay on your device until you finish signing in (at which point we save your shelf to your account and remove them) or until you clear the site’s data in your browser. When you sign in we keep your session token in your browser’s session storage so you stay signed in for that visit; that one is cleared when you close the tab. Google Sign-In sets its own cookies on clif.app to run the sign-in flow. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
  • Purchase information. When you buy premium on clif.app, our payment provider collects and processes your payment details. We never see or store your full card number. We receive only your order status and the email address tied to your purchase.

How we use your information

  • To create your account and keep you signed in.
  • To save and sync your library, highlights, streaks, and progress across sessions.
  • To personalise content recommendations based on your stated preferences.
  • To understand how the service is used in aggregate, so we can fix what people get stuck on and decide what to build next.
  • To diagnose crashes and errors so we can repair them.
  • To maintain the security, reliability, and performance of the service.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal data. We share information only with service providers that help us run the service:

  • Google Sign-In: for authentication, in the app and on clif.app.
  • Polar (polar.sh): our merchant of record for purchases made on clif.app. Polar processes your payment and receives the email address on your order.
  • PostHog (posthog.com): our analytics provider, used by both the app and clif.app, hosted in the United States. It receives the usage events and crash reports described above. From the app it also receives your account id and email address; from clif.app the events are anonymous unless you sign in. Like most analytics tools it can derive an approximate location, such as country or city, from your IP address. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell or share this data with advertisers or data brokers.
  • Cloud hosting & storage: to run our servers and database and store account data.

We may also disclose information if required by law.

Data retention

We keep your account and activity data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it by law.

Your rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time. To delete your account and everything associated with it, follow the steps on our Delete Your Account page, or email contact@clif.app and we will process your request.

Children’s privacy

Clif is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date above when we do. Continued use of the service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
